As the first residential Teen Challenge program for boys, Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch has been serving families for more than 38 years. We feel that a relationship with Christ is the surest way to a lasting difference in the lives of the teenagers we serve. Every major portion of our program is biblically based. We believe that centering our program on Christ explains why numerous teenagers have realized success here, even where other programs failed.
A few factors show the difference between Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch and other therapeutic boarding schools:
MORE STAFF — First, we keep student-to-staff ratios low to ensure that boys get a lot of supervision and personal attention. Our staff are highly trained and most have bachelor or master’s degrees in their area of work.
ADVENTURE-BASED LEARNING — Our outdoor adventure program is second to none. Our students have regular opportunities to experience fun and challenging outdoor activities. Students enjoy camping, backpacking, rappelling, canoeing, and spelunking (cave exploration). Students are challenged physically and learn the importance of goals and perseverance.
MORE PRIVACY FOR EACH BOY — Rather than housing all the boys in a large dorm filled with bunk beds, our students enjoy their own bedrooms, separate from the noise and influence of the other boys.
MORE FAMILY VISITS — Residents are allowed to make visits to home on seasonally scheduled breaks.
MORE MISSION TRIPS — Mission trips form a key component of the program, for this reason: as boys mature, they naturally want to give back and serve others.
EXTENSIVE AFTERCARE PROGRAM — After successfully finishing Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch, boys go home with a strong aftercare program to continue the forward momentum. Aftercare is included in our tuition package.
Education means a lot to us at Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch for Boys, because we think education strongly supports future success. In our accredited private Christian school, boys study on courses led by certified teachers, with individual tutoring available to assist those who need it. We offer a GED option for students with too few credits to finish senior high school in a timely manner. Credits earned can transfer to public or private schools at home. Boys may also study basic vocational skills like woodworking, basic electrical, construction and carpentry, shop skills, basic automotive, and more. After leaving Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch, many boys decide to continue their classwork from home through dual enrollment with Alpha Omega Academy distance education.
Residents at Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch take part in many recreational activities, both on and off campus. We facilitate an adventure program. In addition to being fun and physically challenging for the boys, it teaches them about reaching goals, communicating and cooperating well with others.
Many boys have put their lives back on track and have gone on to make an impact for Christ after graduating from Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch. Joplin is a city in southern Jasper County and northern Newton County in the southwestern corner of the US state of Missouri. Joplin is the largest city in Jasper County, though it is not the county seat. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 50,150. In 2010, the surrounding Metropolitan Statistical Area had an estimated population of 175,518.
Although often believed to have been named for the ragtime composer Scott Joplin, who lived in Sedalia, Missouri, Joplin is named for Reverend Harris Joplin, an early settler and the founder of the area’s first Methodist congregation. Joplin was established in 1873 and expanded significantly from the wealth created by the mining of zinc; its growth faltered after World War II when the price of the mineral collapsed. The city gained travelers as Route 66 passed through it; “Joplin, Missouri” is among the lyrics to Bobby Troup’s legendary song, immortalizing the city among others on the famous highway.
On May 22, 2011, Joplin was struck by an extremely powerful EF-5 tornado, resulting in at least 160 deaths and more than 900 injuries, along with total destruction of thousands of houses, and severe damage to numerous apartments and businesses, St. John’s Medical Center, and multiple school buildings.
