What ADHD Looks Like in Teens
Life with ADHD can be challenging for teens and their parents. This neurodevelopmental condition can cause problems in school, difficulty following instructions or staying on task, disorganization, and behavioral problems.
Trouble concentrating or becoming easily distracted may look like it takes an unreasonably long time to complete homework which may cause a complete refusal to do the work. As a result, students with ADHD may fall behind in school and be at an increased risk of dropping out.
Teens with ADHD often also have recurring problems with disruptive behavior. They may seem to become easily frustrated and lose their temper quickly. Or, they might have difficulty controlling emotions or impulses. This can look like frequent trips to the principal’s office or involvement with the law.
When Is a Residential Therapeutic Program the Right Choice for Teens with ADHD?
More than 3 million teens are living with an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis. Many of them are able to function in the classroom and in their personal lives, but everyone is different. Some with a more severe disorder, or those who have developed maladaptive coping mechanisms struggle to function with an ADHD diagnosis.

Are symptoms severely impacting daily life?
When ADHD symptoms are impeding success in daily activities to the extent that the teen is unable to complete work, succeed in school, or if symptoms are negatively impacting family relationships, therapy can help. When outpatient therapy proves ineffective, a long-term residential placement can provide the structure and space to overcome diagnosis-related changes and learn skills for success.
Does the teen have more than one co-occurring diagnosis?
Often, ADHD as a single diagnosis can be effectively managed through outpatient therapy. However, when more than one diagnosis is co-occuring, treatment becomes increasingly complex. These individuals often benefit from an immersive, residential treatment program that can tailor services to meet their unique needs.
Have outpatient treatment options previously failed?
For many, outpatient therapy provides enough support to overcome ADHD challenges. However, if a teens who have previously failed with outpatient services or who have had multiple short-term placements, often benefit from longer-term treatment like a residential program.
Is there an immediate risk of danger?
Teens struggling with severe ADHD-related symptoms may use maladpative behaviors to cope with the stress of academic failure, deteriorating personal relationships, and other negative experiences. If behaviors pose an immediate risk to the individual or those around them, placement in a residential treatment program can help keep everyone safe.

How Long is Your Residential Treatment Program?
The length of treatment services vary by need and choice. Typically, our long-term residential program provides up to 9 months of continues services on campus followed by an additional 6 months of aftercare transition support. However, that plan is broken down into four pieces: a 90-day therapy-intensive stabilization program, a 90-day balanced therapeutic and personal growth program, and a 90-day therapeutic boarding school program. For some teens, 90-120 days of treatment will enable them for success while others may benefit from a longer placement. We focus on individualizing treatment plans to match the needs and goals of every client receiving care at our facility.
