You probably never thought you’d have to choose a treatment program for your struggling teenager. The responsibility might feel overwhelming, as you may have expected professionals to guide you through this process.
The fact that you’re faced with this decision suggests a positive change in how adolescent therapy and behavioral health are approached. In the past, parents and teens had limited choices, often realizing later that alternative treatments might have been better.
With many treatment options available, it’s important to navigate this decision wisely. Here are some practical tips:
-
Consider Different Perspectives: Understand that each treatment center may focus on its unique approach. Some prefer talking therapy, while others suggest group activities or adventure-based methods. It’s like shopping for a service, so visiting the facility or talking to other parents who’ve experienced the program you’re considering is a good idea. Get opinions from professionals in different areas to find the right fit for your teen.
-
Ask Questions: Politely but firmly ask questions when talking to counselors and therapists. You have the right to know and should expect satisfactory care. Inquire about the professional’s experience, track record with troubled teens, success rates, and how they define success. Ask about common challenges and their frequency.
-
Communication is Key: Request references from the program you’re considering. They might not provide details of other clients due to privacy rules, but they should have families willing to share their experiences. If they hesitate to provide references, consider it a red flag.
-
Connect with Others: There are support groups for families dealing with troubled teens. Organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offer resources and local chapters. Attending local support group meetings can help you learn about different treatment programs and hear from other parents.
-
Do Your Research: If you’re comfortable with it, use the internet for information. If not, visit your local library. There’s a lot of information out there, but always consider the source and be critical of what you read. Ultimately, trust a program with a proven track record.
Choosing the Right Treatment for Your Struggling Teen
In summary, when deciding on the best treatment for your teenager, carefully consider the potential for success and the risks involved. Consider what your teen needs and how the treatment might affect their future. No matter which program you go with, staying positive and well-informed as you navigate this challenging journey is essential.
